Wassim Korbi

Wassim Korbi, born on June 23, 1982, in Kélibia, Tunisia, is a renowned Tunisian filmmaker and academic, specializing in audiovisual and cinema sciences and techniques. He holds several prestigious degrees, including a Ph.D. in Design Sciences and Technologies from the University of Manouba in 2013 and a second Ph.D. in Humanities, Social, and Religious Sciences with a specialization in Sociology from the University of Sfax in 2023. Additionally, he earned a Master’s degree in Arts and Techniques in 2007 and a Bachelor’s degree in Arts and Communication in 2005. Wassim has dedicated his career to teaching and research in cinema. He is currently an Assistant Professor at a university in Bahrain, having previously taught at the Higher School of Audiovisual and Cinema of Gammarth/University of Carthage and various institutions in Tunisia, such as the Institute of Press and Information Sciences (IPSI), the Higher Institute of Arts and Crafts of Gabès, and the Higher Institute of Multimedia Arts of Manouba.

In 2013, Wassim was honored as an Ambassador of Amazigh Culture by the Tazla Institute for Cultural Diversity in Los Angeles. Among his written works are “The Identity of Tunisian Cinema: Foundational Principles and Contemporary Shifts” and “The Amazigh Component in Maghreb Cinema: Identity and the Challenges of Diversity.” He has numerous publications in international journals and actively participates in conferences and symposiums focusing on identity, sociology, and cinema, reflecting his commitment to and influence in the Maghreb and Arab film industries.

Beyond his academic contributions, Wassim is also a prolific filmmaker. He owns Takfarinas Production, a film production company, and has directed several acclaimed films, including “The Flowers of Tiwilit” (2012), “Azul” (2013), “180 Degrees of Happiness” (2016), “The Madman of the Sea” (2018), and “Wreck” (2023). His first short film, “The Flowers of Tiwilit,” was screened at various international festivals, including the Short Film Corner at the Cannes Film Festival, Seattle (USA), Detmold (Germany), Geneva and Lausanne (Switzerland), Bulgaria, and the Oran Film Festival. It has won several awards, such as the first prize at the European Film Days in Tunis, the Maghreb Film Festival in Oujda, and the Arab World Festival in Ifrane, Morocco.

Wassim has also served as a jury member at several prestigious festivals, including the Mannheim-Heidelberg Festival in Germany in 2011, the Fribourg Festival in Switzerland in 2013, the Ifrane Azrou Festival in Morocco in 2013, the Dubai Festival in 2013, and the Gulf Radio and Television Festival in Bahrain in 2024.
